Bloomsburg Rally Falls Short in Loss to Lander
GREENWOOD, SC- Trailing 11-2 in the top of the ninth inning to Lander University, the Bloomsburg University baseball team rallied to score four runs and had the tying run in the on-deck circle but ultimately lost 11-6 in its second game of the day at the Lander University Spring Break Classic. The Huskies dropped the first game of the day 13-5 to Lincoln Memorial University.
In the top of the ninth Keith Sacarakis (Allentown/ Liberty) led off the inning with a single. After a fielder's choice, Billy Manning (Nazareth/ Nazareth) singled and Matt Robinson (York/ Red Lion) walked to load the bases with one out. The Huskies then got three consecutive RBI singles from Syril Kress (Littlestown/ Littlestown), Kevin Ward (Upper Darby/ Monsignor Bonner), and Rob Watlock (Plains/ Coughlin) to make the score 11-5. Vinnie James (Bristol/ Bristol) then reached on an error to make the score 11-6. However, Lander pitcher Brad Hay got the next two batters to strike out to close out the game.
In the first game of the day, the Huskies lost 13-5 to Lincoln Memorial University. Bloomsburg got off to the early lead in the bottom of the third inning when Andy Bucher (Littlestown/ Littlestown) hit a two-run home run to give the Huskies a 2-0 lead.
However, after a scoring a run in the fourth to make it 2-1, Lincoln Memorial exploded for eight runs in the fifth inning to make the score 9-1. Seven of the eight runs in the inning came with two outs.
Bloomsburg was able to cut the lead to 9-4 in the bottom of the sixth when Watlock doubled to bring two runs home. The Huskies added a run in the seventh to make the score 9-5 but could not get any closer. Lincoln-Memorial added a run in the eighth and three runs in the ninth to make the final score 13-5.
Bloomsburg, 2-7, will travel to Milledgeville, GA to take on Georgia College and State University, the #1 ranked team in Division II, on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
